What is TPN?
Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is a method of providing all the necessary nutrients your baby needs – including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals – through an intravenous (IV) line. This specialized form of nutrition is used when a baby’s digestive system is not fully developed or functioning properly, or when they are unable to take in enough nutrients orally or through tube feeding.
When is TPN Necessary?
TPN may be recommended for babies who:
- Are born prematurely: Premature babies often have immature digestive systems that are not yet ready to handle full feedings.
- Have intestinal problems: Conditions like necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) or short bowel syndrome can prevent babies from absorbing nutrients through their intestines.
- Have undergone surgery: Babies who have had surgery on their digestive system may need TPN while they recover.
- Are critically ill: Babies with severe infections or other critical illnesses may require TPN to support their nutritional needs while they focus on healing.
