Screen & Test (1st Trimester)

Screens & Tests (1st trimester)

The first trimester, covering weeks 1 to 12, is all about laying the groundwork for a healthy pregnancy. During this crucial phase, your body is undergoing significant changes, and it’s the best time to catch any potential concerns early on. That’s why your doctor will recommend a series of important screenings and tests to check both your health and your baby’s development.

Your journey usually begins with basic blood work to determine your blood type, hemoglobin levels, thyroid function, and immunity to infections like rubella. These tests help your care team identify any nutritional needs or conditions that may require closer monitoring. Alongside this, a urine test will screen for infections and check for abnormal levels of protein or sugar. One of the key assessments in the first trimester is the First Trimester Combined Screening.

Done between weeks 11 and 14, this includes:
● A blood test to measure pregnancy-related hormones
● A nuchal translucency (NT) ultrasound scan to measure the thickness at the back of the
baby’s neck

Together, these help assess the baby’s risk for chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome, Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13. Additional screenings may include tests for HIV, Hepatitis B, and syphilis, as early detection allows for timely care and improved outcomes for both you and your baby.

At Borneo Mother & Child Hospital, we make sure these tests are done comfortably and with care. We walk you through every step and explain all results clearly, so you always feel informed, reassured, and supported during this important first stage of pregnancy.
