Frequently Asked Questions About Underwater Delivery

What are the benefits of underwater delivery?

Underwater delivery offers several potential benefits, including significant pain relief during labour, reduced need for epidural analgesia, increased relaxation and comfort, greater freedom of movement in water, and a gentler transition for the baby from womb to world. Many women report a more positive and empowering birthing experience with water birth.

Is underwater delivery safe for my baby?

When performed in a carefully selected and monitored setting with trained professionals, underwater delivery is considered a safe option for low-risk pregnancies. Extensive research has shown no increased risk to babies born underwater compared to conventional vaginal delivery, and in some studies, it has been associated with benefits for newborns. However, careful screening and monitoring are essential to ensure safety.

Am I eligible for underwater delivery?

Underwater delivery is generally suitable for women with low-risk, singleton pregnancies at term (37-42 weeks gestation) with the baby in a head-down position. Certain medical conditions, pregnancy complications, or previous C-sections may make you ineligible for water birth. Your doctor or midwife will assess your individual suitability for underwater delivery based on your medical history and pregnancy status.

What if I want to get out of the water during labour?

Your comfort and preferences are paramount. You are free to enter and exit the birthing pool as you wish throughout your labour. If you decide you want to get out of the water at any point, or if your midwife or doctor recommends it for medical reasons, you can easily do so, and we will continue to support you with your labour and delivery out of the water.

What are the pain relief options in water birth?

The warm water itself provides significant natural pain relief. Many women find that water immersion is sufficient to manage their labour pain effectively. However, if you require additional pain relief during water birth, we can discuss options that are compatible with water birth, such as gas and air (entonox) or other non-pharmacological methods. Epidural analgesia is typically not used in water birth.

How is hygiene maintained in the birthing pool?

Hygiene and infection control are of utmost importance in our water birthing facilities. Our birthing pools are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between each use, following strict protocols. The water is continuously filtered and maintained at a consistent temperature, and water quality is regularly monitored to ensure a safe and hygienic birthing environment.
