Your baby’s first few hours and days are an exciting time, but it can also feel overwhelming as you adjust to life with your newborn. Here’s what you can expect and how to care for your little one during this precious time:
Bonding:
Skin-to-skin contact is highly encouraged right after birth. It helps regulate your baby’s temperature, stabilizes their heartbeat, and promotes breastfeeding. Bonding with your baby in the early hours is an important step in establishing a connection.
Feeding:
Whether you are breastfeeding or formula feeding, ensure your baby feeds regularly. Newborns usually feed every 2-3 hours. Breastfeeding also helps with uterine contraction, which aids in your recovery.
Sleeping:
Newborns sleep a lot, but they wake up frequently to eat. Create a safe sleep environment by placing your baby on their back in a crib or bassinet without soft bedding, to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Diapering and Hygiene:
Newborns go through many diapers a day. Be gentle when cleaning their sensitive skin and use soft wipes or a warm washcloth. Regular diaper changes are essential to prevent rashes.
Doctor Visits:
In the early days, your baby will have several check-ups to monitor their growth and development. Be sure to follow the pediatrician’s advice on vaccinations, feeding schedules, and developmental milestones.
