Feeding Frequency:
- Newborns have tiny stomachs and need to feed frequently—at least 8 to 12 times in 24 hours.
- Don’t time feeds rigidly; instead, follow baby’s hunger cues.
Feeding Cues:
- Early: Smacking lips, turning head (rooting), sucking on fingers.
- Mid: Fidgeting, stretching, mild fussiness.
- Late: Crying (which can make latching harder—try to feed earlier).
Night Feeds:
- Feeding at night is important! Prolactin levels (milk-making hormone) are higher during nighttime, helping establish your supply.
Cluster Feeding:
- Baby may want to feed more often during growth spurts (typically around 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months). This is normal and helps increase milk production.
