Contractions are your body’s natural way of helping your baby move into position for birth. They feel like strong, rhythmic tightening or cramping in your lower belly and back — starting mild and gradually becoming more intense and closer together.
There are two main types:
● Braxton Hicks (false labor): Usually irregular, mild, and go away with rest or hydration.
● True labor contractions: Get stronger, longer, and come at regular intervals. They don’t stop with rest and usually signal that labor has begun.
You’ll know it’s time to head to the hospital when contractions are coming every 5 minutes, lasting around 60 seconds each, and have been consistent for at least an hour — or if your water breaks.
At Borneo Mother & Child Hospital, our labor team is ready 24/7 to guide and support you through every wave of contractions with care, comfort, and compassion.
