Labor is a mix of physical and emotional work. Here are ways to manage the intensity and stay focused during each phase:
● Breathing Techniques: One of the simplest ways to cope is through deep, controlled breathing. It helps you stay calm and focused, managing pain and anxiety. Try breathing in for a count of four, holding for a second, and breathing out for a count of four.
● Movement: Changing positions can help ease the discomfort. Walk, sway, rock on a birthing ball, or try kneeling or leaning forward. Whatever feels right for you — it’s about staying comfortable and flexible.
● Hydration & Snacks: Sipping water and having light snacks can help you stayenergized, especially in early labor. Keep some small, easy-to-digest snacks (like crackers or fruit) handy.
● Support & Touch: A gentle massage, a warm shower, or simply holding your hand can provide comfort. Emotional support, even through words, is crucial. You can use positive affirmations like, “I can do this” or “Each contraction brings me closer to my baby.”
● Pain Relief Options: Know that you have options for pain relief, from epidurals to medications, to alternative techniques like TENS or water immersion. Don’t hesitate to ask your provider about what’s available.
Remember, no method is “better” than another — it’s about what feels right for you at the moment. At Borneo Mother & Child Hospital, our team will be with you throughout your labor, offering guidance, support, and the reassurance you need to stay calm and in control.
