After birth, a baby’s umbilical cord stump will remain attached for a few days to a week before it naturally dries out and falls off. During this time, proper umbilical cord care is necessary to prevent infection. Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid covering the stump with tight clothing or diapers.
Fold the top of the diaper down so it doesn’t rub against the stump. Some parents prefer to clean the area with warm water and a clean cloth, but it’s important to avoid using alcohol or any antiseptic solutions, as they can delay the healing process.
The stump will begin to dry out and turn brown or yellow before falling off naturally. This usually happens between 1 and 3 weeks after birth. If the area becomes red, swollen, or produces a foul smell, or if there is significant bleeding, contact a healthcare provider immediately. These could be signs of infection, which may require medical attention.
