Dental care for babies should begin early, even before their first tooth emerges. Parents can clean their baby’s gums with a clean, damp cloth after feedings to remove any residue and help establish good oral hygiene habits.
Once the first tooth appears, usually around 6 months of age, parents should begin brushing the baby’s teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a tiny smear of fluoride-free toothpaste. It’s important to brush at least twice a day—after breakfast and before bed—to remove any food particles and prevent tooth decay.
As your child grows, they will require regular dental check-ups, beginning by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth. This helps ensure that their teeth are developing properly and gives the dentist an opportunity to provide advice on brushing techniques, pacifier use, or diet.
Establishing a positive relationship with dental visits early on helps to reduce anxiety and sets the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health.
