The period following childbirth, often referred to as the “fourth trimester,” brings with it a wide range of emotional changes. It is normal for new parents, particularly birthing mothers, to experience fluctuations in mood as they adjust to hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the overwhelming responsibilities of newborn care.
Some may feel joy and relief, while others may experience anxiety, sadness, or irritability—often referred to as “baby blues.” These usually subside within a couple of weeks. However, if feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or disconnection persist or worsen, it may indicate postpartum depression or anxiety, and professional support is recommended.
At Borneo Mother & Child Hospital, our postnatal care team includes mental health professionals and counselors to help families navigate emotional changes after childbirth with sensitivity and support.
