Fifth Disease
Fifth’s disease, also known as erythema infectiosum, is a viral infection caused by human parvovirus B19. It is most common in children and causes a distinctive “slapped cheek” rash.
Symptoms:
- Bright red rash on the cheeks that gives the appearance of a slapped face
- A lace-like rash that may spread to the body and limbs
- Mild fever, headache, and cold-like symptoms
- Mild joint pain (in older children or adults)
Treatment:
- Fifth’s disease usually resolves on its own without specific treatment.
- Pain relievers for joint pain and fever reducers may help.
- Children with a weakened immune system may need closer monitoring.
