Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy, usually between the 24th and 28th weeks. It occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin to handle the increased blood sugar levels caused by pregnancy hormones. While it usually goes away after delivery, it’s important to manage it carefully to protect both mother and baby.
If left unmanaged, gestational diabetes can lead to:
● High birth weight (macrosomia), increasing the risk of a difficult delivery or C-section
● Premature birth
● Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in the baby after birth
● Increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes for both mother and child later in life
How It’s Diagnosed
The condition is usually detected through:
● Glucose Challenge Test (GCT): A simple blood test done after drinking a sugary drink, typically around 24–28 weeks.
● If the GCT result is abnormal, a follow-up Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) confirms the diagnosis.
Managing Gestational Diabetes
The goal is to maintain blood sugar levels within a healthy range to avoid complications.
Lifestyle & Diet
● Eat small, frequent meals with balanced carbs, protein, and healthy fats
● Choose whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-glycemic foods
● Avoid refined sugar, sugary drinks, and highly processed foods Exercise
● Regular physical activity (like walking or prenatal yoga) helps lower blood sugar levels and improves insulin sensitivity.
Medication
● In some cases, insulin injections or oral medications may be needed if lifestyle changes are not enough.
Monitoring
● Regular blood sugar checks at home
● Frequent prenatal visits to monitor your baby’s growth and well-being
After Delivery
● Gestational diabetes usually resolves after birth.
● However, it’s important to get tested 6–12 weeks postpartum to ensure blood sugar has returned to normal.
● Continue healthy habits, as women with gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.
