Scarletina (Strep Rash)
Scarletina, or scarlet fever, is a bacterial infection that often occurs with strep throat. It causes a red, sandpaper-like rash and is associated with a sore throat.
Symptoms:
- A bright red, rough-textured rash, usually starting on the neck, chest, and groin
- Sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes
- Redness in the face and tongue (which may appear “strawberry” in appearance)
Treatment:
- Scarlet fever is treated with antibiotics to eliminate the Streptococcus bacteria.
- Symptom management includes fever reducers and staying hydrated.
- It is important to complete the full course of antibiotics to prevent complications.
