After a vaginal birth, the recovery process focuses on healing both physically and emotionally.
While vaginal births tend to have a faster recovery time than Cesarean sections, it’s still important to take the necessary steps to heal and rest.
What to expect during vaginal birth recovery:
- Vaginal bleeding: After birth, you’ll experience vaginal discharge (lochia) for several weeks, which gradually decreases in amount and changes in color.
- Perineal discomfort: The perineum (the area between the vagina and anus) may be sore, especially if you had an episiotomy or tear. Warm baths, ice packs, and over-the-counter pain medications can help.
- Cramps: You may experience cramping as your uterus contracts back to its pre-pregnancy size.
- Urinary or bowel issues: Some women experience difficulty urinating or bowel movements post-birth. This usually resolves within a few days.
- Fatigue: Labor and delivery are exhausting, so rest is essential for your recovery.
- Emotional changes: Hormonal changes after birth can affect your mood, and many women experience “baby blues” in the first few days.
