Newborns have their own little rhythm—different from adults and even from other babies. Understanding what’s “normal” helps you bond better and worry less.
Typical newborn behaviors include:
- Sleepy stretches: Newborns sleep 14–18 hours a day, waking often for feeds.
- Startle reflex: Sudden movements or noises may cause twitching or flailing arms. This is the Moro reflex and fades in a few months.
- Irregular breathing: Pauses and fast breaths can be normal in newborns. However, loud grunting or bluish lips should be checked by a doctor.
- Crying: It’s how your baby communicates. They may cry when hungry, wet, tired, overstimulated, or just needing comfort.
- Feeding cues: Rooting (turning head to the side), lip smacking, or sucking hands are all signs they’re ready to feed—watch for these before they cry.
❤️ Each baby is learning to adapt to this big, new world. Patience, observation, and loving touch go a long way in helping them feel safe and secure.
