The third trimester, spanning from weeks 29 to 40, is a critical time for both mother and baby. As you approach delivery, your doctor will perform a series of important tests and screenings to assess the baby’s position, growth, and well-being, as well as to monitor the mother for any late-developing complications.
Key Screenings & 3rd Trimester Tests
- Growth Scan / Ultrasound
● Usually done between 32–36 weeks
● Assesses baby’s position, growth, weight estimate, fluid levels (amniotic fluid), and placenta placement - Fetal Non-Stress Test (NST)
● Monitors fetal heartbeat and movement
● Often recommended if there are concerns about fetal well-being, decreased movements, or in high-risk pregnancies - Biophysical Profile (BPP)
● Combines ultrasound and NST to check fetal breathing, movement, muscle tone, and amniotic fluid levels - Group B Streptococcus (GBS) Screening
● Done between 35–37 weeks
● A vaginal and rectal swab to check for GBS bacteria, which can be passed to the baby during delivery
● If positive, IV antibiotics are given during labor to prevent infection in the newborn - Blood Pressure & Urine Tests
● Continued at every visit to detect preeclampsia (a condition marked by high blood pressure and protein in urine) - Repeat Hemoglobin / CBC
● Done to check for anemia or any other blood-related concerns before delivery - Blood Sugar Monitoring (if required)
● For those previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes, blood sugar levels may be monitored to ensure control - Internal (Pelvic) Exam (Towards the End)
● Around 37 weeks onward, your doctor may check for cervical dilation and effacement as signs of early labor
Optional/Additional Tests
● Doppler Ultrasound (in high-risk pregnancies) to assess blood flow to the baby and placenta
● Rh Antibody Testing (for Rh-negative mothers)
