ICSI: A Precise Path to Parenthood

At Borneo Hospital, we understand the complexities and emotional toll of infertility. Our dedicated team of fertility specialists is here to support you on your journey to parenthood. If you and your partner are facing male infertility challenges, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may offer the hope and solution you’ve been seeking.

What is ICSI?

ICSI, or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, is a specialised fertility treatment that involves injecting a single healthy sperm directly into a mature egg. It’s a highly effective procedure often used in conjunction with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to overcome male infertility factors and increase the chances of fertilisation.

When is ICSI Recommended?

ICSI is typically recommended in cases where:

  • Severe male factor infertility: This includes low sperm count, poor sperm motility (movement), or abnormal sperm morphology (shape).
  • Previous failed IVF attempts: If traditional IVF has been unsuccessful due to fertilisation issues, ICSI can significantly improve the chances of fertilisation.
  • Frozen sperm: ICSI is often used with frozen sperm samples, which may have lower motility compared to fresh sperm.
  • Obstructive azoospermia: This condition involves a blockage in the male reproductive tract that prevents sperm from being ejaculated. ICSI can be performed using sperm retrieved directly from the testicles.

The ICSI Process:
Precision and Expertise

Ovarian Stimulation
You'll receive fertility medications to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. We'll closely monitor your progress through regular ultrasounds and blood tests.

Egg Retrieval

Once your eggs are mature, we'll retrieve them through a minimally invasive procedure under sedation.

Sperm Collection and Preparation

Your partner will provide a semen sample, or, in cases of obstructive azoospermia, sperm may be retrieved directly from the testicles. The sperm sample is then carefully prepared in our laboratory to select the healthiest and most motile sperm.

ICSI Procedure

Using a micromanipulator and a fine needle, a single healthy sperm is injected directly into each mature egg.

Embryo Culture

The fertilised eggs (embryos) are carefully nurtured in our state-of-the-art laboratory for several days, allowing them to develop.

Embryo Transfer

One or more healthy embryos are selected and transferred into your uterus using a thin catheter. This is a simple and painless procedure.

Pregnancy Test

Approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer, you'll take a pregnancy test to determine if the ICSI cycle was successful.

Potential Risks and Considerations

While ICSI is a safe and effective procedure, it's important to be aware of potential risks and considerations:
Multiple Pregnancy

As with IVF, there's a slightly increased risk of conceiving twins or triplets with ICSI.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)

This rare but serious condition can occur when the ovaries overreact to fertility medications.

Other rare complications

These may include bleeding, infection, or damage to surrounding organs during the egg retrieval process.

We will discuss these risks in detail during your consultation and monitor you closely throughout the treatment to minimise any potential complications.
